Study: Physicians Increasingly Favor SMS, yet HIPAA Fears Remain

A new study was just published recently out of the University of Kansas School of Medicine that looked at physician’s preferred method for “brief communication” while on the job.  The results prove that text messaging is increasingly becoming the favored choice.

The University polled 106 physicians and found that 27 percent named texting their preferred method, compared to 23 percent that favored hospital-issued pagers, and 21 percent that said face-to-face conversation was preferred.  Among the survey pool, 57 percent reported sending or receiving work-related text messages, though it’s important to note that a majority of those polled were younger physicians — with 62 percent only having practiced medicine for 10 years or less.

Highmark Partners with mobileStorm to Power New Community Outreach Mobile Messaging Plan

mobileStorm has been selected as the mobile messaging provider to increase Highmark’s member health, extend their outreach efforts.

Los Angeles, CA, March 20th, 2012 – mobileStorm, Inc. (www.mobilestorm.com) announced today that Highmark Inc., an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association based in Pittsburgh, has officially partnered with them to implement a mobile messaging initiative to reach members, employees, group customers and the community at large. Highmark’s objective is to reach their audiences on mobile devices, which are a preferred communications channel, and ultimately impact the overall health of their members and the community as a whole.

Highmark is currently implementing campaigns to influence healthy behaviors for members and its own employee base. Highmark is also evaluating opportunities to use text messaging to reach group customers and the general community.

“We have always sought the most innovative and sustainable ways to elevate the health and well being of our members and our community as a whole,” said Paul Puopolo, Vice President of Business Innovation at Highmark. “Part of providing great services is listening to people and communicating with them via the channels that they prefer to use. Mobile messaging creates relevant, personalized and proactive communication that is critically important to elevating member health. mobileStorm is an experienced solution provider who shares our vision and desire to create a healthy and productive community.”

“Highmark is the largest insurer in the state of Pennsylvania, and their need for consumer communication is growing.  Our multi-channel communication platform will be able to facilitate their growth and the need to communicate with their members across multiple devices,” said Jared Reitzin, Founder & CEO of mobileStorm.  “We just hit the tipping point with smartphone penetration in the U.S. and in the next five years, we will see close to ninety percent adoption.  The smartphone is quickly becoming the hub of a consumer’s communication lifestyle.  If you look at communication costs for channels like direct mail, it can be as high as eighty cents per member per month and take up to a week to have your message read.  And even then you cannot be sure someone read your message.  Text messages cost ten times less, and on average are read within four minutes.  Other mobile channels like mobile apps and push notifications are seeing similar results.  There are many different types of consumer messages sent from older and less engaged channels, which can easily be ported over to digital for mobile distribution.  If we can lower costs for our clients and at the same time keep their members healthier by a higher level of engagement, then we’ve done exactly what we’ve promised the industry we would do.”

mobileStorm for Healthcare is a multi-channel healthcare messaging system that enables healthcare payers and providers to launch powerful one-to-many campaigns with a virtually limitless number of members.  The platform uses the channels that are most relevant and accessible to the public, the ones on their mobile devices, in order to influence a wide variety of healthy behaviors and dramatically reduce expenses.  These include SMS, email and push notifications as well as AppMail™, a cutting edge new channel that allows companies to communicate PHI via HIPAA compliant messages directly to a secure inbox on the members’ mobile devices.

Nokia Faces $55K Fine for Violating SMS Spam Laws

No company is too big to avoid strict SMS spam laws, as evident with Nokia who’s being forced to pay a $55K fine for violating Australia’s Spam Act.

According to Australia’s communications regulator, Nokia “sent or caused to be sent CEMS (commercial electronic messages) with an Australian link, without the consent of the recipients.”  In addition, it claims the spam messages didn’t contain “clean and accurate sender information” or “functional unsubscribe facilities.”  All of which are huge no-nos when it comes to sending SMS messages — no matter which country you’re in.

At mobileStorm, following digital messaging best practices and guiding our clients through the many rules and regulations associated with SMS is always a top priority — no matter how big or small the campaign is.

Report: Mobile App Audience During Super Bowl Reached 98M, Rivaling TV Audience at 111M

A new report out from mobile analytics firm Flurry shows that the audience reaching for their mobile devices and firing up apps during this year’s super bowl nearly rivaled the total TV audience — which is impressive considering this year’s event was the most watched TV program in history.

Flurry estimates that the number of users who launched applications in the United States between the hours of 3:15 PM PST to 7:15 PM PST on Sunday, February 5 totaled 98M.  The total television audience, according to Nielsen, reached 111M.  What’s most interesting is the mobile app engagement shown throughout the game.  Looking at the overall trends reveal a highly correlated, inverse relationship between app usage and game, halftime and commercial events.

Survey: 90 Percent of Marketing Teams use Social Media, Yet Investment Remains Low

A new survey published today by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) had some interesting findings in terms of social media and the large gap that exists between the attitudes on behalf of large brands and the investment being seen in both time and money.

The survey, called “Marketing in Today’s Economy,” surveyed more than 100 marketing executives across North America on their company’s use of email, mobile and social media marketing. The survey found that a full 90% of marketing executives surveyed use social media, and three quarters believe it has a positive impact on their business, yet more than half (54.5%) of respondents said their company’s marketing team spends less than 10 hours per week investing in social media.
