Planet Funk Sees 377% ROI With mobileStorm-powered Coupons

March 16,2009—Planet Funk, the fashion-forward clothing chain, on Monday revealed that it achieved a 377 percent return-on-investment with mobile coupon campaigns launched during the holiday shopping season.

The Burbank, California-based retailer, which targets trendy young men and young women, also saw a staggering 91 percent redemption rate on the coupons. The campaign was launched on November 21, 2008 and ended on December 21, 2008. Twenty percent of revenue for the month of December was generated by the almost 2,000 coupons that were generated, and which were sent as text messages, or SMS, via the mobileStorm digital marketing platform.

The promotion was the latest in a string of campaigns by the independently-owned eight-store chain, which exclusively sells the Ashley Furniture brand.

“Using email and SMS as digital marketing channels has really impressed us out of the gate and shown us a clear path to offset declining response rates and poor ROI in some of our other forms of advertising,” said Charlie Malouf, co-owner and COO of Ashley Furniture HomeStores of Charlotte, N.C. and upstate South Carolina. “The success of the Secret Sales proves just how effective digital marketing can be and we plan to continue to expand such programs in the future.”

To quickly build its database, Ashley Furniture HomeStores ran contests such as a free gas giveaway and a $500 weekly shopping spree. Ashley Furniture HomeStores sent 34,743 messages in all—6,000 texts and 28,743 emails—on the morning of the first day of the sale. The chain generated revenue of $138,460 in four days.

MobileStorm has received its first round of funding from venture capital firm eonBusiness.

EonBusiness, the sole investor in mobileStorm’s Series A, is known for backing early-stage, Web-based businesses. The firm’s deal with mobileStorm reserves its right to invest more money later on. The capital currently invested by eonBusiness is earmarked for growth, research and design, as well as marketing and sales initiatives.

“We’re amping up our direct sales force,” said Jared Reitzin, CEO of mobileStorm. “We’re opening up an office in San Francisco under our new EVP of sales and marketing, Ric Hattabuagh. We traditionally spent more on PR than marketing, but that’s slowly changing. We’ll have more on pay-per-click and Web advertising and also more traditional channels like trade shows and eventually newspapers and radio.”

The mobileStorm system allows clients to reach an entire database or a selected segment through multiple platforms, including e-mail, SMS, voice, fax and RSS. 04/12/05 - mobileStorm today released the first upgrade of its new core platform, Stun! as well as new training/consulting packages. The new build, Stun! 2.05 addresses several important new features that will help current and potential customers gain even more control of their digital messaging strategies. Key features include the following:

Confirm (Double Opt-In) Subscribers - A key component of maintaining maximum deliverability and integrity of your database is to ensure that your subscribers have requested to receive your messages. This can now be easily achieved with Stun’s Confirm Subscribers process, which allows customers to send a message to either a portion of or their complete database asking the users to confirm their subscriptions. Those that do are automatically added to the database. Those that do not are given one more chance to do so and if they do not respond to either message, are dropped from the database. The end result is a streamlined database that can yield a much higher response rate and protect customers from being labeled as a spammer.

Do Not Mail List - Being a responsible digital marketer requires you to be vigilant in making sure anyone who no longer wishes to receive your messages is removed as quickly as possible. However, when your list is in the tens of thousands, it can be hard to make sure such requests are honored. Stun! 2.05 adds a new tool to help do this via the Do Not Mail List. This feature allows you to add email addresses, landline, cell phone and fax machine numbers that will be permanently blocked from receiving any future messages. It can be used not only for users that have complained about receiving your messages but also to block competitors from adding their addresses to your lists as well.

Enhanced Template Editor - Stun! 2.05 features an entirely new, enhanced template editor to give you even more features when creating a message in the system. Now you have the ability to create more complex messages from scratch (including inserting Flash and media objects) as well as using our existing templates. Other changes include the ability to add frames/tables, view the HTML coding of the message, plain text option (for those subscribers that cannot receive HTML emails) and Undo/Redo option to correct mistakes.

Image Library - Stun! 2.05 now gives each client 2 Megabytes of data storage in an image library, which can be accessed as part of the new Template Editor. The library enables customers to store common images, such as logos, pictures or graphics that need to be access for multiple mailings. The documentary will explore the rise and evolution of electronic music DJs and explain how the status of the DJ in this scene has risen to epic heights over the past 20 years and why the people who buy/download/listen to the music and attend clubs and shows in this genre are so faithful. The film will be shown next year at the world’s largest film festivals. It will premiere at Sundance 2004 and then be shown at the Berlin Film Festival, Cannes, AFI and others. After that it will receive limited theatrical release at select theaters throughout the country.
