Report: 62 Percent of Smartphone Owners Download Apps

According to new data out from Nielsen, 62% of U.S. smartphone owners have downloaded apps in the last 30 days, with users reporting having an average of 33 apps installed on their device — up 22% over last year.

The report shows that 83% of apps installed on users’ devices are a combination of both iPhone and Android — showing the overwhelming dominance of Apple and Google within the mobile app ecosystem.  Those with iPhone apps lead with an average of 44 apps, followed by Android at 32.  Android app interest is growing, however: 49 percent of all Android device owners downloaded an app in the last month, up from 4 percent two years ago.  Thirty-four percent of iOS device owners installed an app within the last 30 days, followed by BlackBerry owners at 11 percent and Windows Mobile at 3 percent.
